Greater Sidney Area Emmaus Newsletter October 2003
October Sharings from Sharon............
School pictures; aren't they great?! There is so much
anticipation and sometimes anxiety about having them taken. When the package
arrives with the final "click" in print, young people are buzzing about signing
and trading their captured image.
Remember going back and looking through your yearbooks? Or lining up the school
pictures of years gone by? It's amazing and sometimes even comical how we change
through the years. Like going through that awkward phase, eh? I have a few that
I cringe to see. The elementary photo with really curly, wavy hair that my
mother insisted on putting up in pin curls the night before. It was hard to
smile that day. Or the one with tortoise shell glasses on a very, very skinny
face. But they get better as maturity comes. The graduation picture has a
content and broad smile - maybe the short hair (no curls!) and the contacts
helped!
Have you lined up the photos of your spiritual schooling lately? Some years I'm
not sure if I could tell a difference. This growth has some slow spots. Could it
be because this growth depends on how much I seek and allow it to happen? Huh. I
guess that's why the Emmaus talks start out with Priority. Seems to always come
back to that one. Where am I spending my time, my money, .. What is my priority?
The mission of Emmaus is to inspire, challenge and equip church members for
Christian action in their homes, churches, places of work and the world
community. To build up Christian witnesses. That mission was not over when you
completed your pilgrim walk. That was the end of the beginning (to use the words
of a David Phelps song - check it out!). Nor was it over after serving on a team
or two or when your term on the Emmaus Board was over. The harvest is plenty but
the laborers are few the Bible says. We have much to do.
If you are seeing the same faith picture as before, get back to the basics
(another great song - this one by 4HIM!). Seek out Christian fellowship at
church, Share group and your Sidney Emmaus community. We miss you! But most
importantly, God misses time with you. Seek Him on a daily basis. You'll be
amazed at the change in your smile.

GSAE Board News and Notes...........
The GSAE Board has been busy with several projects, mainly the renovation of the
Emmaus Storage room. We are trying to make the best use of the area, as well as
remedy some concerns about the safekeeping of our equipment. This is an ongoing
project, as we continue to try to meet the needs for space of the Board Members,
as well as the Community and Team Members.
We are also working on a slate of Nominations for several Board positions for
the 2004-2005 two year terms. The openings include Vice Chair, Secretary,
Kitchen, Social, Logistics, Women's Good Shepherd, Women's Registrar, and
Sponsorship. Nominations to the Board will be voted on at the October Gathering,
and the new Board Members will begin their terms in January. Please keep the
Board in your prayers as we go through this process and the transition of new
Board Members that will follow.
We would like to welcome two new Clergymen to the Board, as Jeff Smalley and Don
Ramsey have agreed to join us as Assistant Spiritual Directors for the
Community. Bless you both for your willingness to serve God and His people in
this capacity!
We have also voted on and chosen the Lay Directors for several upcoming walks.
Carleen Pettit will be leading the Women's Walk #32 from January 22-25, 2004,
and Eric Truxal will lead the Men's Walk #28 from February 19-22, 2004. Please
keep them in your prayers as they prepare to select and lead teams and guide the
pilgrims of these Walk weekends.
F.Y.I.
In case an emergency arises during an Emmaus Walk weekend and you need to
contact a pilgrim, the following phone numbers are being made known to the
Community. The order is based on the location of the home of the Executive Board
Members in relation to the church, to assist in getting information to the team
and pilgrims promptly.
#1 Sidney First Un. Meth. Church (937) 492-9136
#2 Treasurer Patty Yinger (937) 498-2599
#3 Leadership Randy Locker (937) 394-2930
#4 Chairman Sharon Halter (937) 585-4869
#5 Vice-Chair Jerry Noble (937) 465-7696
#6 Secretary Cindy Stienecker (937) 335-0568
A young, new preacher was walking with an older, more seasoned
preacher in the garden one day. Feeling a bit insecure about what God had for
him to do, he was asking the older preacher for some advice. The older preacher
walked up to a rose bush and handed the young preacher a rosebud and told him to
open it without tearing any of the petals. The young preacher looked in
disbelief at the older preacher and was trying to figure out what a rosebud
could possibly have to do with his wanting to know the will of God for his life
and ministry. But, because of his great respect for the older preacher, he
proceeded to try and unfold the rosebud while keeping every petal intact . . .
It wasn't long before he realized how impossible this was to do. Noticing the
young preacher's inability to unfold the rosebud without tearing it, the older
preacher began to recite the following poem:
It is only a tiny rosebud
A flower of God's design;
But I cannot unfold the petals
With these clumsy hands of mine.
The secret of unfolding flowers
Is not known to such as I.
GOD opens this flower so sweetly,
Then, in my hands, they die.
If I cannot unfold a rosebud,
The flower of God's design,
Then how can I have the wisdom
To unfold this life of mine?
So, I'll trust in Him for leading
Each moment of my day.
I will look to Him for His guidance
Each step of the Pilgrim's way.
The pathway that lies before me
Only my Heavenly Father knows.
I'll trust him to unfold the moments,
Just as He unfolds the rose.

Thirty Books?
There are thirty books of the Bible in this paragraph. Can you find them? This
is a most remarkable puzzle. It was found by a gentleman in an airplane seat
pocket, on a flight from Las Angeles to Honolulu, keeping him occupied for
hours. He enjoyed it so much, he passed it on to some friends. One friend from
Illinois worked on this while fishing from his john boat. Another friend studied
it while playing his banjo. Elaine Taylor, a columnist friend, was so intrigued
by it she mentioned it in her weekly newspaper column. Another friend judges the
job of solving this puzzle so involving, she brews a cup of tea to help her
nerves. There will be some names that are really easy to spot. That's a
fact. Some people, however, will soon find themselves in a jam, especially since
the book names are not necessarily capitalized. Truthfully, from answers we get,
we are forced to admit it usually takes a minister or scholar to see some of
them at the! worst. Research has shown that something in our genes is
responsible for the difficulty we have in seeing the books in this paragraph.
During a recent fund raising event, which featured this puzzle, the Alpha Delta
Phi lemonade booth set a new sales record. The local paper, The Chronicle,
surveyed over 200 patrons who reported that this puzzle was one of the most
difficult they had ever seen. As Daniel Humana humbly puts it, "the books are
all right here in plain view hidden from sight." Those able to find all of
them will hear great lamentations from those who have to be shown. One
revelation that may help is that books like Timothy and Samuel may occur without
their numbers. Also, keep in mind, that punctuation and spaces in the middle are
normal. A chipper attitude will help you compete really well against those who
claim to know the answers. Remember, there is no need for a mad exodus, there
really are 30 books of the Bible lurking somewhere in ! this paragraph waiting
to be found.

Agape
We need 72 pieces of agape for the Women*s Walk
for mealtime, 42 pieces for bedtime (Pilgrims only),
or 72 for bedtime (Pilgrims and Team).
Please mark on your bag/box how many pieces there are so we don*t have to count
everything to figure out whether it is mealtime or bedtime agape. This is a
tremendous help. Also, no SUPER agape for pilgrims. If it won*t fit in the
Sunday packet, the pilgrims will not get it until after the Walk. This creates
extra work for the team to find the sponsors
to take care of their pilgrim*s super agape, so please wait and give it to them
after the Walk. This would be a wonderful act of agape for them on the way home
or in the following week.
There are several other Walks taking place the
same weekend as Sidney Women*s Walk, and
we have been asked by these communities to lift
them in prayer as well. How awesome that so many
people will be praying for all these pilgrims throughout our country and even
around the world! So as you pray for Sidney*s Walk, please also pray for these:
Drakensberg in South Africa
Noah's of Ark in Arkansas (Women*s Walk #101)
Living Waters in Texas (Women*s Walk #39)
Pathway East in Georgia
Seaside in South Carolina
Show Me The Way in Missouri
Thank you for being disciples of Christ.
