Greater Sidney Area Emmaus Newsletter June 2003

Where He Leads Us, We Will Follow......

Greetings in the name of our Risen Savior,

When asked to write this article, I accepted with mixed emotion. I have been involved with Emmaus or Cursillo for over 23 years. My Walk was with the Columbus Cursillo group in 1981; Men's Walk #70 sat at the Table of Living Joy. I have served on a number of teams with 6 communities and sat on Steering Committees for 2 Communities. I am currently a Co-Spiritual Director for the Greater Sidney Community. I say all of this because when we say yes to Jesus, we never know where He will lead us.
I recall one Walk where there was a reluctant pilgrim. She did not want to be there. At the Closing, she stated she only said yes, to get her Sponsor "off her back." She took few notes, sang very little, and seemed to be last at everything. Then, as she put it, "Saturday came and I sensed God's presence as only I had done as a little child." Dying moments began the emotional onslaught. Candlelight was way beyond anything she had ever experienced. And then there was the Agape', from family and friends and strangers.
Emmaus is about love; Loving people and accepting people at face value. Emmaus is about God's love, love for each person and love through the Cross of Calvary. Emmaus is about re-awakening the soul and discovering or re-discovering Loves full potential. Emmaus is about our relationship with first Jesus Christ and then with people who live with us in our Fourth Days.
I have enjoyed being a part of the Sidney Emmaus Community. I have learned much from you. Yet with this sharing I bid you a fond farewell. I have accepted an appointment in Hicksville, Ohio and will be working with the Northwest Emmaus Community. May the Sidney Community continue to grow in God's Grace.

DeColores,

Pastor Jerry Lewis

News from your Emmaus Board Members...
Amy Zorn, SuppliesChairperson
When you are on vacation or sent out of town on business, don't forget the Table of Forgotten. We can always use little bottles of shampoo, shower caps, and the small soap bars that are complimentary in most hotel rooms. (Towels, bedspreads and lamps are usually not complimentary, so we'll politely decline those donations.) Bring them to the Gatherings where the supplies director will take them off your hands, or give them to LOGS on the weekend.
Curt Hostetler-Men's Registrar
The first pilgrim confirmation cards were sent out the first part of May for the July Men's walk on 7/17-7/20. Sponsors will be contacted soon after we receive the pilgrim's affirmation. An alternative the traditional method of submitting applications by mail is to obtain the application electronically from the Greater Sidney Area Emmaus website, complete it and email it to the Men's registrar at chostetler@woh.rr.com.
Candy Sharp-Literature
We are looking for "lost" team manuals! If you have served on a team in the past as a Spiritual Director or Music Director or ANY other position, please check to see if you have a team manual in hiding. We are missing several manuals and need to find them if possible. If you have one please contact Candy Sharp at (937) 394-2002. Your assistance in this would be greatly appreciated.
Social Chair-Diane Gault
Diane Gault, Social Chair, would like to request that the Community be aware of the need for more food at Closings (especially Women's Walks) and at some Gatherings. Let's put our best food forward to show our newest members why we say "When Emmaus meets, Emmaus Eats!!!!" (and eats well!!!!!!)

News From the Agape Chairman
A reminder that we will need agape for Women's Walk #30 which begins on June 19. We need 72 pieces for mealtime agape, 42 pieces for pilgrim bedtime agape, and 72 pieces for pilgrim/team bedtime agape. Please mark on your bag/box how many pieces there are so we don*t have to count everything to figure out where it goes. This is one way we can all show the pilgrims how much they are loved.
Also, no SUPER agape for pilgrims. If it won't fit in the Sunday packet, please save it until after the Walk.
We would also like to create a new agape letter for the Sidney Emmaus Community. This is the letter that we send to other communities for their Walks. Remember all those letters that were received during your Walk and hung up for you to read? This is what we are in need of. Many of the communities are requesting that we e-mail our letter to them. So, if you have an idea for our agape letter, and you have a computer, please create it in Microsoft Word and e-mail it to me by July 15 at gmandy@bright.net mailto:gmandy@bright.net>. If you have an idea but don't have a computer, put your idea on paper and mail it to me at 210 E. Walnut, Anna, OH 45302. I will present all ideas to the Emmaus Board in July for their decision.

Thanks for being disciples of Christ.
Pat Gregg

Where He leads..........................................
As many of you may already know, two of our Board Members and well respected community members will soon be leaving the Greater Sidney Area Emmaus Community. They have received new appointments from the United Methodist Church. Pastor John Schlicher will be leaving the Anna United Methodist Church, as he was called to pastor a church in Swanton, Ohio. Pastor Jerry Lewis will be moving to pastor a church in his new home of Hicksville, Ohio. They will now be involved in other Emmaus Community's activities in Northwest Ohio. They have been an integral part of this community, therefore we would like to wish them both a fond farewell, and pray they go safely in their travels. May God always bless them as they continue to humbly and graciously serve Him.

Musings from Mindy
As your Newsletter Chairman for the 2003-2004 year, I have found the position to be fun, yet challenging. Who knew that this would be so much work! I have to say a great big thank you to several people, as I continue to learn my new job. Marilyn Kohler, past Newsletter Chairman, has been helpful beyond measure to me during this transition period. Board Chairman Sharon Halter's support has been unwavering, as I continue to learn and grow. Terry Sharp, website coordinator, has been very patient with me, as we continue to work to get the Newsletter information online for the Community to enjoy. (Check it out!!!!) The support of all of these people, as well as the Community, will allow me to continue to try to do my best, as I took the leap of faith to accept this Board position. I have added a few things to the newsletter, namely the names of Lay and Spiritual Directors on upcoming walks. This is not to glorify them in any way, but rather, I would ask that you keep these people in your prayers as they answer the call to lead a Walk Weekend. May God continue to bless the Sidney Community and it's members as we serve Him daily!
Mindy Settlage

We Need YOU to...............................
The GSAE Board of Directors is continuing our efforts to update our database. We will be at the June Gathering asking you to check our list of Community Members to see if your address/phone number are correct in our records. Please take a moment to check that for us before or after Gathering. If you are unable to be at the Gathering that evening, please be sure to contact Teresa Truxal, Outreach Chairman, to be sure we have up to date information on you. You may reach her at 4455 South Dixie Highway, Lima, Ohio 45806 or call (419) 999-1830.

From your Music Chair..............
If you are blessed with the gift of musical talent, there are opportunities for you to present those talents at Gatherings. Remember that there are special needs for the October Gathering, where the Community is blessed to see many acts of agape love through music that evening. If interested in any of these activities, please see Eric Truxal or call him at (419) 999-1830
