MAY GATHERING IS “KAIROS GATHERING”

WHAT IS KAIROS?

Kairos is an interdenominational Christian ministry designed for use in state and federal men’s and women’s correctional institutions of the U. S. with adaptations for other countries and languages.  The ministry is conducted, in cooperation with the chaplains of correctional institutions, by teams of laity and clergy who are qualified by their experiences in Christian renewal movements.  Team members are selected, trained and certified by area governing bodies of Kairos and approved by correctional institutions as citizen volunteers.

The primary objective of the 30day short course is to prepare selected residents for the ongoing Christian community of Kairos, and the ongoing ministry of the church.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF KAIROS?

The purpose of Kairos is the establishment of strong Christian communities among the populations of correctional institutions. This is done through the impact of small, 3 to 5 person share and prayer groups in resident leaders in the institution.  These groups meet weekly to share their lives on a very deep spiritual level and to pray for one another and for the other residents and staff in the institution  Thus, Kairos is a ministry of the church. a ministry of the apostles whom Jesus, the Christ, has called into community and sent forth into the environment of the correctional institution.  Kairos has been called the best example of the early church in existence today.  The objective of Kairos is to impact the correctional environment through the action, as apostles of Jesus Chris, of the leaders in all areas of human activity in the prison.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

PRAY

Kairos is a prayer-supported ministry.  Hearts are changed, eyes are opened, and lives are restored through prayers.

VOLUNTEER

There are countless opportunities for you to be involved in Kairos.  Besides team participation, people are needed to coordinate prayer vigils, transportation, food service, records maintenance, and sharing the message of Kairos with churches and other groups..

CONTRIBUTE

Kairos is largely support by the giving of individuals.  For every institution that Kairos enters, expenses increase by approximately $10,000.00 per year. No contribution is too small.

BAKE COOKIES

Kairos takes 10,000 DOZEN homemade cookies into the institutions for each 3-day weekend. Realizing how many caring, loving, cookie making, individuals 120,000 home-made cookies represents has quite an impact on the residents.  They are but one expression of love received by the residence during the weekend, yet for some reason, one that nearly all the residents remember.

Candlelight Offering

WHY AN OFFERING DURING CANDLELIGHT??

We all are aware of the ever-increasing pressure on our own budgets.  It seems as thought it is a weekly event to discover another item in our budget that has increased our expenses.

The Emmaus budget is no different.  Costs for suppliers and food have continued to steadily increase over

the past couple of years.  In addition, The Upper Room has increased the fee we pay for each pilgrim 25%, from $7.50 to $10.00 per pilgrim.

Other communities have addressed this problem with registration fees above the $65.00 required by the Greater Sidney Area Community.

The Board continues to make every effort not to raise our registration fees. One step has been to start collecting an offering during the Candlelignt..  The hope is that we will not need to raise the registration fee, however we will need to continue to monitor our costs to assure that we maintain a positive financial position.  Thank you for your understanding.

The Changing World of Pro Wrestling

The world of professional wrestling is no different than anything else in the world.  Things are constantly changing.

Many veteran fans remember the first boon in wrestling.  With the advent of the television in the 1950’s, every TV network in the nation was broadcasting pro wrestling.  Names rising to the top included Geogeous George, Nature Boy Buddy Rogers, and Lou Thesz.

As wrestling evolved into the 60’s, such names as The Sheik, Bobo Brazil, Dick the Bruiser, Wilbur Snyder, Ernie Ladd, Chief White Owl, Haystacks Calhoun and Wild Bull Curry began to be top stars.  Later on, in the 70’s fans may remember The Mighty Igor, Killer Brooks, The Fabulous Kangaroos, The Stomper, Ben Justice, Luis Martinez and Flying Fred Curry.

Many years ago when TV wrestling changed from blank and white to color, ring wear also became more colorful.  The persona a wrestler would take varied from gentleman to unleashed beasts.  A wrestler’s charisma was often judged by his ability to interview at ringside.

When I started wrestling in 1972, the Ohio-Michigan territory was owed and operated by Sheik Ed Farhat.  I broke in through Lou Klein’s Gym in Allen Part, Michigan, just days after graduating high school.  I had watched many of the stars I was now wrestling from my ringside seat at Hara arena in my hometown of Dayton, Ohio.

Regional territories ruled the wrestling business at the time. The aspect of cable TC was less than a dream at this point.  A guy by the name of Vince McMahon, owner of the World Wrestling Federation, would embrace that idea years later and revolutionize what we see today.

Early in my career I wrestled in territories based in Texas, Indianapolis, Nashville, Kansas City and Alabama.  I also made appearances in such cities as St Louis, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, Pittsburg and Chicago.

I faced most of the top stars of the era.  The names include Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, Dusty Rhodes, Andre the Giant, Lou Thesz, The Sheik and Bobo Brazil plus hundreds more.

It was when I decided to settle in West Central Ohio did I open Midwest Championship Wrestling in 1982.  We brought matches to various towns as fund raisers for non-profit organizations.  Our banner hung in such towns as St. Marys, Sidney, Lima, Kenton, Marysville, Findlay, Celina, London, Ottoville, and many others.

I trained Al Snow, who has gone on to star with every top promotion in the nation. I also trained Carl Ben Patrick, who formed The Flying Tigers with Larry Wilson, gaining regional acclaim.

The evolution of the WWF, now known as the WWE, has created a new sense of what fans expect from wrestling performers.  While the physical aspect of wrestling has grown more demanding than the old days, so have the things that surround it.

Superstars drinking beer and graphically displaying hand gestures towards authority figures on TV are cheered by youngsters watching the show.  I hope no young lady watching TV today someday hopes she can become one of the scantily clad ringside women used to keep males interested.  Parents need to take a close look at what their children are watching when it comes to wrestling.  Parents are ultimately responsible for their children.

After 20 years of a physical toll in the ring, my brother, Rick Lancaster, and I retired on the same day following a tag team match on August 9.1992, in Jackson Center, Ohio

Currently, I’m a free lance writer, wrestling historian and Christian testimonial public speaker.  I am also participate in prison ministry programs.

It wasn't until after I quit wrestling and closed my promotion, that I found the Lord in my life.  I attended the Greater Findley Area Emmaus Men’s Walk # 22, in November of 1995, and my life changed forever.  I encourage you to make such a commitment and not to wait as long in life that I did.

May God truly bless you forever and ever.

“Big Jim Lancaster” AKA  —  Jim Painter, Jackson Center, Ohio
